Dahlias do need water, so how can we grow dahlias and reduce our water usage????
Here are a few ideas ....
*** A drip system gets the water to where the plant needs it and does not waste water.
** The best drip system only provides water when the dahlias need it .
** The system should be on a timer, or use a timer to be sure you turn off the water.
** Run the system early in the morning so the water has a chance to soak in and not evaporate.
*** Mulch around each plant. Use compost or shredded paper. Be careful that earwigs or snails are not hiding in the paper!
*** Each dahlia can be planted in a two gallon container, to hold the water around the dahlia.
*** Sacrifice a shower or two each week so the water can go to another use!
*** Annie from Annie's Annuals had a lot to say ... Scott (from EBMUD) says. “If you’re doing everything you can do to conserve water, then you shouldn’t feel guilty about gardening. There’s enough to use, just none to waste.”
