How do I plant tubers?

Picture
Tubers should be planted in fertile soil where there is at least six hours of sun.  Plant when the soil is warming, in  late March, April or early May.   Follow these simple steps and you will be fine.  This is not rocket science, so variation  will not be much of a problem.

Without endorsing a particular product, these are products available today that seem to work.  Protect your new plants from snails, slugs and earwigs!

Picture
Start by rototilling in  compost - or just dig some compost into the hole where you want your beautiful plant.

Picture
Stake the place before starting.  The tennis ball on the top of the  stake is to prevent injury if a person trips or falls.

Dig a hole 6 - 8 inches deep.

Scatter about a tablespoon of a time release fertilizer.

Add water and then turn the soil.  Do not water again until the plant is growing!

Picture
Place the tuber flat with the eye facing up.  If there doesn't seem to be an eye, lay the tuber flat anyway.

Picture
Cover the hole about half way with soil.  The balance of the hole should be filled as the sprout grows above the surface of the soil.  Some growers just fill the hole and let the tuber grow.

Picture
Be sure to label each stake with the name of the dahlia.  The tennis ball on top is a safety feature to prevent injury in case of a fall in the garden.

This is when your plant is most vulnerable to snails, slugs and earwigs.  Earwigs have been known to devour the plant in one night.  Protect your new plants with some sort of snail and earwig bait!
